Infosys to set up big facility for Apple
Times of india article
BANGALORE: There will be a lot more of India in Apple products soon. The $108-billion maker of iPhones and iPads is scaling up sharply the work it outsources to Infosys Technologies.
The Bangalore-based IT giant has rented a 1.40-lakh-sqft office space near its headquarters in Electronics City to house employees who would work exclusively for Apple. Sources in the real estate industry who did not want to be named said the building would have the capacity to house 1,400 people. The centre will be operational by the end of the year.
It was previously reported that Apple CIO Neil O'Connor had met the Infosys top brass in Bangalore in January, leading to speculation that Apple was looking at outsourcing more to Indian companies. When contacted, Infosys said in an emailed response: "We are unable to participate in your story."
Infosys had a role in developing apps for iCloud Helped develop applications for Apple Retail Store 2.0. It has also helped in the design of frameworks for the iOS.
Apple outsources application development and maintenance work to the extent of Rs 490 crore to Indian IT services providers. It is said to account for $50 million (Rs 275 crore) of Infosys' annual revenue of $7 billion.
Assuming that the new space that Infosys is taking for Apple will house a new set of employees , it would mean that Apple would be giving an additional business of at least $65 million (Rs 357 crore) every year to Infosys, considering that each Infosys employee accounts for an average annual revenue of $47,000. Infosys has about 1.5 lakh employees.
Former employees of Infosys who had worked on the Apple account said the current work is being executed by employees across Bangalore, Mangalore, Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram . The ultra-secretive Apple does not disclose the nature of work it does with third parties. But the former Infosys employees said Infosys played a role in developing applications for iCloud - a service that allows users to access music, calendar, documents and email via the cloud and which automatically syncs with your Mac, iPad and iPhone.
Infosys has also worked on developing applications for Apple Retail Store 2.0 launched last year, where iPad displays took the place of paper placards in Apple stores. The iPad offered an interactive way to explore the features and prices of the products being advertised, and it even had a call button to summon an Apple representative to the product for assistance.
Infosys has also helped in the design of frameworks for the iOS, the operating platform for Apple devices that provides interfaces needed to write software for the platform. Many Infosys employees are trained on Cocoa, Apple's native objective-oriented application programming interface.
Apple, with revenues of $108 billion in 2011, is the largest publicly traded company in the world by market capitalization, thanks to the phenomenal success of the iPhone and iPad. The market cap briefly touched $600 billion in April this year and currently is around $571 billion .
In 2006, the company had moved to establish a 3,000-people strong technical support centre in Bangalore. But it withdrew within months following a massive backlash from Apple fans around the world who felt India would not be able to deliver the quality of support they expected. However, it looks like the quality of Indian IT outsourcing work has been too good to resist.

Meet the country's youngest apps programmers
Written by Sam Daniel, Edited by Mala Das | Updated: July 14, 2012 21:17 IST
Chennai: Chennai's Shravan and Sanjay are probably the country's youngest mobile application developers and perhaps, one among the youngest developers around the world. They are brothers, just 10 and 12 years old. Already three of their apps are available for download on iPads and iPhones. The first is a game called "Catch Me Cop". There's an app for children to learn the alphabet and a prayers app for those on the move. The downloads have crossed the 10,000-mark with users from across thirty countries.
Their father Kumaran is an IT expert who introduced them to computers at an early age. What began as a hobby initially is now making money for them. Sanjay says the he and his brother were very excited when Apple accepted their game first. He says, "There are millions of apps in Apple stores. For me such a young developer to get my apps published, wow".
The budding techies say Steve Jobs and Bill Gates inspired them. They want to specialise in educational apps. Presently, they are developing an app for students who miss classes. Shravan Kumaran explains, "When students take leave for various reasons, this would record all class room activities and put it on the cloud. This would reach your device and you can watch the entire class room activity by the teacher, the exercises etc". Another app in the making is "mobile navigation for the visually challenged". Imagine the mobile phone giving voice alerts to a visually challenged person about the things around him or her! That's what they are working at.
Shravan is in Class VIII and his younger brother, Sanjay, is a Class VI student. Did the parents force them or pressure them to study? Their mother Jyothi Lakshmi says no. "We don't even compel them to study. We always tell them they should enjoy whatever they do", she adds.
The boys are aiming high. Their dream is to design the world's lightest tablet. They've launched a company called GoDimensions. Just like Bill Gates and Steve, both have earmarked a portion (fifteen percent) of their profits to charity, for the cause of children in particular.

Apple to Add 500 New Jobs at European Headquarters in Ireland.Apple india Reports to European Headquarter so what does it mean india?
RTÉ reports that Apple is making plans to add 500 more jobs at its European headquarters in Cork, Ireland, bringing the total headcount at the site to 3,300 as the company works to continue expansion of its business in the region. The company plans to construct a three-storey office block next to its existing plant in the city to cater for the expansion of its business in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa.
Apple has been in Cork for 30 years and currently employs 2,800 people in the city. Apple expects to add the new jobs over the next 18 months, and the move appears to be on top of plans for 350 jobs in downtown Cork announced less than a year ago.
The company's main campus in Cork was in the news earlier this week after Greenpeace activists scaled a building to protest Apple's use of coal-derived power at its data centers.
Apple of course continues to expand its workforce at and around its corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California, with the company snapping up a number of leases in the area to support the growth as it works toward building a new campus for up to 13,000 workers. The company is also expanding at its other primary employment hubs, currently working with governmental authorities on a plan to add 3,600 at its administrative and support center in Austin, Texas, doubling the size of its workforce there.
